Born in Tokyo, she first absolved a study of percussion under Michiko Takahashi at the Tokyo Geijutsu University. Since 1978 Ms. Ogawa has resided in Germany, where she did additional studies under Bernhard Wulff at the Musikhochschüle in Freiburg. During the time of her studies she gathered professional experiences in classical and modern music at the Basel Radio-Orchester and the Saarländische Rundfunk Orchester. She is one of the founding members of The Ensemble Modern, and has been working continuously to build and expand the group since 1981. Furthermore she is a guest of many different orchestras and ensembles around the world and as well performs often as a soloist. She has premiered works and collaborated with renowned artists and composers such as John Adams, George Benjamin, Peter Eötvös, Heiner Goebbels, Hans Werner Henze, Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, György Kurtág, György Ligeti, Benedict Mason, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steve Reich, and Frank Zappa.
